Katherina Jesek: Venus in Vectors
Curated by Megan Meadowlark
9 Sept. – 8 Dec. 2025
In this multimedia exhibition consisting of looped video works and digital prints blending vintage and current technologies, self-taught digital artist Katherina Jesek investigates the psychological toll of living multiple lives within digital and physical realms.
The rawness in which her work is compiled and recorded reflects a D.I.Y. attitude that is resistant to corporate polish. Arcade interiors, cyberpunk fiction, programming interfaces, and game design all inspire the work in various ways. Emerald wireframes line the walls of the gallery, created using 80s and 90s cathode ray oscilloscopes and 3D modeling software, though looped in such a way as to reflect early 21st-century GIF culture, which continues to be a favorite shorthand for online communication. A modernist, hard-edge painting influence comes to the forefront in her recent series of amber phosphor photographs. The lofty intentions of modernism are undermined, however, through Jesek’s process, by which compositions are created using early digital painting hardware developed as entertainment for young children. Despite this subversion, Jesek has an authentic passion for abstraction that shines through.
At its heart, Jesek’s work is about intimate communities forged amongst dimly lit rooms and dark screens – a celebration of niche counterculture collectives that persist despite the chokehold of late-stage capitalist ubiquity.
This exhibition is a collaboration with Center for Digital Arts.
