Derrotero

Sat. 10 Sep. 2022 | 4pm

We are living in times of uncertainty about our collective futures. Many of the truths we used to rely on have crumbled and disappeared. But this might also be a time of reconstruction, of establishing new relationships in human and non-human environments. In Derrotero, we show the result of a creative process that is a form of material imagination of these possible connections. Is in that space in-between that we hope private and multiple meanings will arise, reinforcing the connection between the work and the spectators. As migrant Caribbean subjects, we are used to failure and constantly rebuilding our habitats. That is the tenacity at the core of our creative process.

Derrotero was developed by Gabriela Burdsall and William Ruiz Morales in collaboration with composer, Nina Fukuoka, and architect, Daniela Friedman. We would like to give special thanks to Sarah Strauss and Odie Senesh for the great advice, as well as Mikiko Ino, and the Kinosaito team: Michael Barraco, Tunyaluck Phuttal, Alex Rojas, Elizabeth Morocho, Alexa West, and Lilly Gummerson. We also thank Randy King, from King Marina, for allowing us to incorporate his objects into our piece.
