Hand to Mouth: DE-SUICIDE

18 Jun. 2022 | 1pm and 3pm

DE-SUICIDE is a multi-channel sculptural video environment for live performances made by human and non-human collaborators. The objects, movement, language and video materials are the outcomes of a series of in-person and remote workshops with four dancers, two dramaturges, and a musician in three cities—Johannesburg, Berlin, and New York—between August 2020 and November 2021. This residency at KinoSaito was the first time all collaborators are going to be in the same place to share a live performance iteration of the project.

Objects and gadgets are not just instruments or props in the work. They are equal partners, inanimate collaborators, forming a coalition with human performers. To DE-SUICIDE is to become WITH, rather than owning and dominating; is to follow the sculptural sensibility of crafting materials into objects. Whether in the studio, backstage, or in a dance video, bodies, objects, and gadgets hybridize in the act of co-inhabiting the scene.

Hand to Mouth is a non-disciplinary company of sentient and inanimate collaborators founded by visual artist Deville Cohen during the COVID-19 pandemic. To find out more visit www.handtomouth.wtf
